Lots of political “experts” were yucking it up for months after Donald Trump announced his bid for the GOP presidential nomination in the summer of 2015.
But after he won the GOP nomination, the yucking stopped and the predictions began: There was no way he would win the presidency. No way he would beat the anointed one, the first “Madam President,” Hillary Clinton.
It was his style, most said. His gruff demeanor. His plain-spoken nature. His “America first” nativism. Oh, and of course, his ‘crazy’ talk.
Like this one.
During one of his debates with Clinton, the subject turned to abortion and, specifically, late-term abortions. Very late.
“If you go with what Hillary is saying, in the ninth month you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of that baby,” the GOP nominee told NBC News moderator Lester Holt Sept. 26, 2016. “You can say that’s okay, and Hillary can say that’s okay, but it’s not okay with me.
“Because based on what she’s saying, and based on where she’s going and where she’s been, you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month – on the final day, and that’s not acceptable,” he added.
“That is not what happens in these cases,” Clinton replied. “And using that kind of scare rhetoric is just terribly unfortunate.”
Enter the pious mainstream media ‘fact-checkers.’
The Washington Post: “‘Rip the baby out of the womb’: What Donald Trump got wrong about abortion in America”:
Political rhetoric aside, Trump displayed a misunderstanding of how abortion works in the United States.
Doctors won’t perform the procedure at nine months. If a woman’s or fetus’s life is at risk, physicians can induce labor or authorize an emergency C-section. Intentionally killing the baby in the process would be illegal.
The New York Times: “On Abortion, Clinton Takes Ownership of Her Feminism”:
In past elections, presidential candidates have soft-pedaled their views on the subject. This time, Mrs. Clinton sounded resolute and even righteous about defending a woman’s right to control one of the most “intimate and difficult” decisions about her health care.
Mr. Trump used strong language, too, describing how he wants to prevent the ripping of “the baby out of the womb” on the last day of pregnancy. This is what his base wants to hear: Many Republicans, especially religious ones, cite the prospect of future nominations to the court as their reason for supporting Mr. Trump, despite their distaste for, oh, just about everything else about him. So he checked that box.
UK Independent: “Donald Trump accused of telling mistruths about late-term abortion”:
Donald Trump has been criticised for grossly misrepresenting abortions after he described a late term termination on the “final day” of a pregnancy in graphic terms.
Many on Twitter have pointed out that if this were to happen, in most cases this would simply be a caesarean section. If someone then killed the child, it would be infanticide.
Cosmopolitan: “John Oliver Mocks Donald Trump for Having No Idea How Late-Term Abortions Work”:
Oliver then mocked Trump’s description of a late-term abortion during the third presidential debate, in which Trump said, “In the ninth month, you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of the baby.”
Trump “showed no real understanding of how abortions work, no clear understanding of the basic biology of women’s bodies, and a very poor sense of grammar, as well,” the comedian observed.
Mind you, Trump didn’t say the procedure was legal at the time. What he said was, “If you go with what Hillary is saying, in the ninth month you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of that baby.”
In other words, he was making a predictive statement based on the abortion extremist trend the Democrat Left was already on two years ago.
After being mocked for his statement, guess what happened in Clinton’s adopted home state of New York last week? That’s right: Legislation was passed and signed into law allowing physicians (and even non-physicians) to ‘rip babies from the mother’s womb just prior to birth’ and kill them, using an overly broad “health” exception for third-term abortions.
And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, a lawmaker in Virginia has now introduced similar legislation, and with Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam’s blessing. But the Left is decrying Northam’s racism today, not his support for infanticide — or the closest thing to it.
Once again, our president was out in front of a controversial issue. He gets it that the party of the donkey has gone rogue. They abhor guns because they kill but then empower doctors to murder babies.
Priorities, you understand.
