Report: Pentagon chief Esper fires Navy secretary over controversy regarding SEAL chief Gallagher

(TNS) The Pentagon late Sunday announced that Defense Secretary Mark Esper asked for the resignation of Navy Secretary Richard Spencer following a controversy involving Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher, whom President Donald Trump pardoned last week. after a botched murder investigation.

As we reported Sunday, Spencer pushed back against earlier news reports claiming he planned to revoke Gallagher’s Trident — the symbol SEALs wear on their uniforms signifying their membership in the elite military unit.

Those reports claimed Spencer threatened to resign from his position if the president ‘interfered’ in the case. Following his pardon and the initial reports that the Navy still planned to take action against Gallagher, the president tweeted, “The Navy will NOT be taking away Warfighter and Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher’s Trident Pin. This case was handled very badly from the beginning. Get back to business!”

In addition to Spencer’s resignation threat, The New York Times also reported that the officer in charge of the SEAL teams, Rear Adm. Collin Green, also threatened to resign. Time will tell if that’s true or not because if Spencer is out as Navy secretary, a one-star admiral doesn’t have much of a chance of staying on if he, too, made the threat.

Trump haters will once again chastise the president over this, but it’s exactly what should have happened and needed to happen.

Like the man or not, Trump is president and as such, commander-in-chief of the armed forces. He expressed his desire, in public, that he didn’t want Gallagher punished after he was pardoned. Any attempts to do so — taking away his Trident, for example — would have been a clear act of insubordination.

He cannot have his senior military officials defying him anymore than any other president can tolerate such actions.

This is the kind of actions Pres. Trump needed to do from the beginning. He can’t run this Country when he has to worry who he can trust & who he can’t. These people who think they can cont. acting like they are superior over our President need to be stopped. Every President needs the people who work for him to have the ability & desire to follow orders. You can not have any arm of our Govt. going rouge & going against the President along with threats. Who do they think they are? All these traitors come out acting… Read more »
