(NationalSentinel) When George W. Bush ascended to the White House as our 43rd president, he brought with him two things: A political dynasty, having followed his father, George H. W. Bush, #41, into the Oval office; and something called “compassionate conservatism,” which embodied policies that doubled the national debt, embroiled the nation in a pair of regional wars, and did virtually nothing to advance the conservative agenda of smaller government.

W may not remember - or may not want to remember - but the same establishment media that Trump has little patience with savaged him during his presidency, most often wrongfully framing the debate or advancing bogus narratives aimed at undermining everything Bush was trying to do post-9/11. He was treated terribly by the Washington Press Corps and did very little to push back against lies that were allowed to be repeated so often they became the truth.

So when W today offers criticism of President Donald J. Trump, specifically Trump’s handling of the media and his characterization of the establishment press as ‘the enemy,’ pardon us if it rings just a little hollow. As reported by the UK’s Daily Mail:

Former U.S. president George W. Bush said Monday that a free press was ‘indispensable to democracy’ during his two White House terms – hinting that he disagrees with President Donald Trump’s assessment of some reporters as ‘the enemy of the people.’

‘We need an independent media to hold people like me to account,’ Bush said on the ‘Today’ show.

‘I think power can be very addictive, and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power, whether it be here or elsewhere.’

Fine, Mr. President. No one questions that. Trump himself has even said he has no problem with the media holding him to account or criticizing him personally. What Trump is saying is a) the criticism has to be based on factual reporting; and b) so much of what is being reported is fake news based on false narratives, which hurts the country.

Bush knows this. Throughout his presidency his intelligence was constantly questioned and  ridiculed, despite the fact that the man could fly (at the time) advanced fighter planes and was smart enough to get elected president twice.

For Trump, the undermine thus far has been “the Russians hacked the election to harm Hillary Clinton,” a charge so ridiculous, so demonstrably untrue and one that has never been validated by any U.S. intelligence, despite the reporting being done to insinuate as much.

But here’s W, lecturing Trump about “the media” - Trump, a former reality TV star who’s been “in the media” most of his adult life at one time or another, when he wasn’t building his multi-billion dollar empire.

This tone-deafness explains precisely why, after spending more than $100 million campaigning, the GOP establishment couldn’t convince Republican voters to nominate yet another Bush for the Oval Office.
