Joe Biden isn’t even officially president-elect yet and already his ‘team’ is making threats of a new extended COVID-19 lockdown.
Only, as blue states pushed back against our rightful president, Donald Trump, over issues like immigration (which is solidly within the purview of the federal government), red states are already giving Biden’s people pushback.
The first to do so was Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves.
According to the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger:
“This notion that one of his advisers has said that all we really need is a six-week national lockdown and we can slow down the spread of this virus is totally and completely beyond reasonableness,” Reeves said.
The governor said he feels the economic impact of such a measure would be too detrimental to people in the state as a whole.
“The people of Mississippi can’t just go home and shut down their small businesses … for six weeks, and just think that you can come back six weeks from now, flip a switch and everything’s gonna be fine,” he said. “That’s not the way the economy works.”
Reeves said he understands that the pandemic is one of the longest lasting emergencies the nation has experienced, but he believes states are better left in charge of their individual responses.
“Those emergencies have to be state-managed, locally executed and federally supported,” Reeves said. “We as a state are going to continue with our strategy. It’s got to be targeted — targeted to those counties where the number of cases are much greater than other areas across the state.”
Next up, the anti-lockdown governor, Kristi Noem of South Carolina.
The office of Gov. Kristi Noem said in a statement to the Argus Leader Friday that the first-term governor, who’s risen to stardom in the Republican party for her hands-off approach to managing the pandemic, has no intention of using state resources to enforce any federal COVID-19 orders.
“It’s a good day for freedom. Joe Biden realizes that the president doesn’t have the authority to institute a mask mandate,” said Ian Fury, communications specialist for Noem. “For that matter, neither does Governor Noem, which is why she has provided her citizens with the full scope of the science and trusted them to make the best decisions for themselves and their loved-ones.”
Noem also tweeted support for Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, who noted on Friday that continued COVID-19 lockdowns are stress-testing the outer limits of constitutionality.
There is nothing worse than Democrats in power, except having Democrats with absolute power.
It’ll be up to the resistance states to push back big time against what will be continual constitutional encroachment.
