(National Sentinel) Helpless: Police in California are growing increasingly angry and frustrated over the state’s “sanctuary” law after several criminal incidents committed by illegal aliens, but the supermajority of Democrats who passed it seem oblivious to the death and destruction.

Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said he personally was “very frustrated” with the law following a day-long “reign of terror” that ended with the death of Gustavo Garcia, 36, an illegal immigrant who had twice been deported from the U.S., Fox News reported, citing local California media.

Garcia stood accused fo stealing a truck, robbing a convenience store, shooting and killing one person, and firing at buildings before killing himself in a high-speed crash on an interstate near Fresno. In all, five people were also injured, with one critical.

Police also believe that Garcia was involved in a murder in the Fresno area.

Recently passed legislation on a party-line vote, signed by outgoing Democrat Gov. Jerry Brown, forbids police agencies within the state from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to remove illegal aliens from the country.

During a high-speed chase on Monday, Garcia reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour driving the wrong way. He struck four vehicles along the way, which police say he likely did on purpose.

“We are very frustrated with the fact that the way the laws are set up currently that law enforcement hands are tied,” Boudreaux said Wednesday. He noted that in the past, police were able to cooperate with ICE and would have been able to turn over illegal alien suspects to the agency when it placed a detainer on them.

Not anymore. Now local police agencies need a signed order from a federal judge to turn illegals over to ICE, which had placed a detainer on Garcia.

But, Boudreaux said, he had no choice but to let Garcia walk.

“Gustavo Garcia in times past would have been turned over to ICE officials. Even though it was a misdemeanor charge, they placed a detainer on him. That detainer can no longer be recognized,” Boudreaux said.

“That’s how we did it in the past and that’s how we had always done it. And now, that tool has been taken from law enforcement,” Boudreaux continued. “After [the passage of] SB-54 we no longer have that power.

“That tool has been removed from our hands and because of that our county was shot up by a violent criminal that could have easily been prevented had we had the opportunity to reach out to our fellow counterparts,” he added.

ICE, in a statement sent to local media, said it previously deported Garcia in 2004 and 2014. He was sent to Mexico, according to Fox26.

“Garcia-Ruiz served 27 months in federal prison for re-entering the country prior to his second removal,” the ICE statement said.

“On December 14, 2018, ICE lodged an immigration detainer on Garcia… however that detainer was not honored and he was released from custody later that day without any notification to ICE,” it added.

“This deadly rampage could have been prevented if ICE had been notified of his release. This is an unfortunate and extremely tragic example of how public safety is impacted with laws or policies limiting local law enforcement agencies’ ability to cooperate with ICE.”

Other police agencies have also knocked the state law, echoing Boudreaux’s frustrations. But since Democrats need a permanent underclass they can use to stay in power, they remain unconcerned about public safety and the rule of law.

That said, California — which once voted twice for Ronald Reagan for president — has gone so far Left it’s difficult to imagine the state’s political leanings are going to change anytime soon. That leaves residents with two choices: Remain and be abused — by high taxes, illegal immigrant crime, and a permanent underclass — or find somewhere else to live. - Jon E. Dougherty
