When our first president, George Washington, voluntarily resigned his commission as general of the army after the Revolutionary War, George III, then King of England, from whom our founders rebelled, was said to have been flabbergasted when he heard the news.
Told by American artist Benjamin West that Washington was going to resign, King George said “If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.”
Fast-forward to 2021, when America truly does find itself in the midst of another great leader, Donald Trump.
Oh, sure, a plurality of the country doesn’t think so, but given what the man did for our country in just three short years (he was hampered the entire fourth year due to the Chinese virus), and how he helped it grow and become more secure, no question Trump was one of our greatest presidents.
And now when it comes time for him to essentially be anointed the head of the GOP for as long as he wants it, like Washington before him, Trump is ready to resign that commission in deference to a party he hopes will preserve and protect its founding.
Just the News reports:
Former President Donald Trump on Thursday appeared to distance himself from his superstar celebrity status in the Republican Party, suggesting that the GOP should pursue pro-American policies rather than build a platform around Trump himself.
The former president made the remarks during a lengthy interview with Rita Cosby on New York’s WABC Radio on Thursday night. Asked by Cosby whether or not the rising status of Trump-friendly U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik means that the GOP is the “Republican Party of Trump,” Trump demurred.
“Well, look, I’m not looking to have it be the party of Trump, I’m looking to have a great country,” he said. “I’m looking to have a country that is run by people that know what they’re doing.”
“And we had it going, and then they had a fraudulent election,” he added, alluding to claims that the 2020 election involved significant levels of voter fraud and illegal voting.
King George III would have been flabbergasted, in a pleasant way.
