Well, so much for the NFL.
The Marxist Left has been targeting the league for destruction and/or irrelevance for more than a decade, and it appears as though they’ve succeeded.
The Washington Redskins organization is getting ready to bend a knee at the altar of the BLM and ‘conduct a thorough review’ of changing its ‘racist’ name.
Though ‘Redskins’ isn’t racist, never has been racist, and was never intended to be.
The Daily Mail reports:
Amid growing pressure from Native American groups, sponsors, and even the city’s mayor, the Washington Redskins have announced they will conduct a ‘thorough review’ of the team’s name, which is considered by many to be offensive.
‘In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name,’ read the statement. ‘This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks.’
Friday’s statement came after the team received a formal name-change request from FedEx, which was ostensibly using its leverage as the title sponsor of the Redskins’ stadium in Landover, Maryland to persuade franchise owner Daniel Snyder.
Meanwhile, the NFL’s official apparel provider, Nike, has made no statement over the matter, but silently scrapped all merchandise bearing the team’s name or logo from its online store.
Snyder has refused to change the team’s name for years. But now that the signature sponsor, FedEx, for which the team’s home stadium is named, is demanding the change, it’s just a matter of time now.
For the record — and not that it’s going to matter to the Left-wing Marxist outrage mob — ‘redskins’ is actually a term of endearment and, as Snyder has said in the past, a ‘badge of honor.’
And also for the record, the vast majority of Native Americans do not want to see the name changed, nor do the hordes of Democrat-voting fans of the DC-based team.
NBC’s Pro Football Talk reported just last year:
A new survey has found that Native Americans are more likely to be proud than offended by the name of the Washington Redskins.
The survey, as reported by the Washington Post, asked 500 people who identify as Native American to pick from a list of words which one best described their feelings about the Redskins name. The word most picked was 'proud.' …
These results echo those of a 2016 poll that found that only 9 percent of Native Americans described themselves as offended by the Redskins name, while 90 percent said it did not bother them.
Daniel Snyder celebrated that poll and will no doubt celebrate this one, as evidence continues to mount that the majority of Native Americans are not pressuring him to change his team's name.
But again, the mob doesn’t give a damn about anything but its perpetual outrage at America’s founding and its institutions.
