You knew that eventually police departments and their representatives would start pushing back against the mischaracterization that all cops are racist, bigoted murderers of innocent minorities, and the NYPD is leading the way.
During a Tuesday press conference, New York Police Benevolent Association President Mike O'Meara said that police interact 375 million times per year with the general public, the vast majority of which are “overwhelmingly positive.”
He added that all cops should not be painted as bad due to the troubling actions of a few officers in Minneapolis.
“We all read in the papers that in the black community, mothers are worried about their children getting home from school without being killed by a cop. What world are we living in? That doesn’t happen. It does not happen,” he said, the Washington Examiner reported.
He added that he and his fellow officers are “not Derek Chauvin,” the Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering Floyd after pinning him to the pavement for several minutes with his knee as the victim complained he could not breathe.
O’Meara said those in the department “roundly reject” Chauven’s “disgusting” behavior and should not be compared to him.
“He killed someone. We didn’t. We are restrained,” he said, later adding, “Everybody’s trying to shame us. The legislators, the press. Everybody’s trying to shame us into being embarrassed about our profession.”
“Stop treating us like animals and thugs, and start treating us with some respect,” he said. “That’s what we’re here today to say. We’ve been left out of the conversation. We’ve been vilified. It’s disgusting.”
O’Meara also angrily denounced the press for failing to even bring up the fact that “a number” of police officers have been killed around the country in the past week alone.
“Our legislators abandoned us,” he continued. “The press is vilifying us. Well, you know what guys? I’m proud to be a cop. And I’m gonna continue to be proud to be a cop until the day I retire.”
