The New York Times’ Nikole Hannah-Jones, infamous for wrongly claiming that the American Revolution was fought primarily to preserve slavery, has now justified looting of businesses ‘in the name of George Floyd’ because it’s “restitution” for black Americans ‘historically oppressed’ by society, or something like that.
In an appearance on CNN — where else? — Hannah-Jones intimated to Christiane Amanpour that Americans concerned about the widespread lawlessness following the legitimately disgusting and disturbing death of Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police that we shouldn’t be upset when blacks steal from business owners who had nothing at all to do with anything involving Floyd.
CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR: You've said, among other things, 'people who have been left out of the social contract find no need to adhere it.' Somebody, sort of, checked you on that and said, 'not left out, but excluded from the social contract.' And you agreed with being term-checked.
NIKOLE HANNAH-JONES: Absolutely. You are asking whose communities have been looted for decades, don't have proper schools, don't have proper amenities. When we see someone killed by the police, that is the worse manifestation of police violence, but it doesn't get to the daily violence that doesn't end in death or the daily degradation that black Americans face.
The fact that these communities have been prayed upon by predatory lenders, it goes on and on. When we think about someone taking something from some big-box name store, it is symbolic. That one pair of shoes that you stole from Footlocker is not going to change your life, but it is a symbolic taking.
Except it’s never just ‘one pair of shoes.’ Entire stores are cleaned out, and often, one looter grabs several items.
And ‘daily degradation?’ What is she talking about, and why won’t anyone in the ‘mainstream media’ ever ask people like her who make those claims to explain them or provide some examples? These people act as though not a single ounce of progress has been made in civil rights for the 250-odd years America has been around.
More to the point though, what Hannah-Jones’ assertions and generalizations say about her?
A couple of things.
First of all, she’s obviously okay with people stealing things that don’t belong to her.
She’s also racist; she just claimed, essentially, that ‘the typical looter’ is black.
And doesn’t she hate that kind of stereotyping?
As to her claim that colonists rebelled against Great Britain to keep slavery alive, a) the vast majority of colonists didn’t own any slaves; b) the real reasons for rebelling — to shake off the yoke of English tyranny — are well-documented; and c) how come black writers and scholars never point fingers at the black tribal leaders in Africa who gladly sold their own people into slavery in the first place?
In any event, proving (again) that Pulitzer Prizes are only reserved for Left-wing liberals, Hannah-Jones was given one for her ridiculous slavery claims.
