President Donald Trump railed against Democrat plans to nationalize mail-in voting under the guise of the coronavirus pandemic, saying there is “no way” it would be “anything less than substantially fraudulent.”
“There is NO WAY (ZERO!) that Mail-In Ballots will be anything less than substantially fraudulent,” the president wrote on Twitter. “Mail boxes will be robbed, ballots will be forged & even illegally printed out & fraudulently signed.”
Trump singled out California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who recently signed an executive order allowing statewide mail-in balloting — an order that is currently being challenged in court by the Republican National Committee and a former GOP lawmaker currently running for his old Southern California seat, Darrell Issa.
The president noted that “professionals” will steer people to vote for Democrats even if they don’t really want to.
“This will be a Rigged Election. No way!” he said.
A spokesperson for Newsom’s office claimed that people would be ‘risking their lives’ by voting in person, even though the coronavirus death rate is minuscule, there are no major outbreaks in California, and the pandemic is already receding.
“Voters shouldn’t have to choose between their health and their right to vote,” Newsom’s office said.
The Republican National Committee, National Republican Congressional Committee and California Republican Party filed a lawsuit Sunday against Newsom and Secretary of State Alex Padilla in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, USA Today reports.
The suit says that Newsom’s order is a “usurpation of the legislature’s authority” to set the “time, place and manner” of elections, as outlined in the state and federal constitutions.
“This brazen power grab was not authorized by state law and violates both the Elections Clause and Electors Clause of the U.S. Constitution,” the complaint says.
The GOP groups also noted in their complaint that mailing out the ballots is a “recipe for disaster” because even inactive voters will receive them, which “invites fraud, coercion, theft, and otherwise illegitimate voting.” And “invalid votes dilute the votes of honest citizens and deprive them of their right to vote in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment.”
