(TNS) If President Donald Trump’s objective is to head off a cycle of violence he himself predicted would come the longer the country remains under virtual lockdown over coronavirus, he’s certainly going about it in a funny way.

Or rather, his ‘coronavirus task force’ advisers are.

Over the weekend, Dr. Deborah Birx, the response coordinator, told Americans who already cannot go to gyms, restaurants, clothing stores or 1,000 they should now stop going to grocery stores for food and pharmacies for medicine.

The New York Post reported:

The White House coronavirus task force is warning against even going out to buy groceries or medication as the pandemic is expected to hit a deadly apex in the coming two weeks.

“The next two weeks are extraordinarily important,” White House coronavirus response coordinator Deborah Birx warned at a press conference late Saturday.

“This is the moment to not be going to the grocery store, not going to the pharmacy, but doing everything you can to keep your family and your friends safe,” Birx warned. …

“This will probably be the toughest week — between this week and next week,” President Donald Trump told the White House press conference. “There will be a lot of death, unfortunately … there will be death,” he warned.

No offense, Mr. President, but define “a lot.” Because frankly, though deaths continue to rise, they are not apocalyptic numbers. And as each day passes, it doesn’t look like they’re going to be.

If the president and Dr. Birx know something the rest of us don’t, now would be a great time to tell us.

Because otherwise, this just looks like stupidity. And more needless panic.

Birx’s statement is now two days old, and in a coronavirus news cycle, that is a long time. Since she said that, the number of deaths has begun to wane, especially in New York City, the U.S. epicenter for the virus. In fact, on Monday, the stock market responded to that revelation positively, shooting skyward more than 1,200 points at one measure.

The problem is, far too many Democratic mayors and governors who are enjoying the newfound powers they have under emergency edicts are using the White House task force’s recommendations to further clamp down on their citizens.

And so, when a task force member says, ‘Hey, we need to be clamping down further,’ that’s one set of instructions from this White House they will listen and respond to.

Keeping people out of food stores and pharmacies is a recipe for disaster. Worse, it’s a recommendation coming from officials who don’t have to worry about silly little constitutional concepts like ‘freedom of movement’ or where their next meal is going to come from.

Worse still, there is not outward justification for this extremity. Yeah, we can all read an online chart showing us how many people are sick with coronavirus and how many people have died. Got it.

But the numbers are not apocalyptic. Far from it. At this point, they haven’t even reached flu epidemic numbers.

Recommending a further shut down at this point, without providing Americans something more than, ‘Well, we just think it’s going to get worse,’ is BS, straight up.

Meanwhile, the Swedes have got to be shaking their heads at our — for lack of a better word — public policy cowardice. They have coronavirus too, they’re just not shutting down their country and cowering in fear. In fact, Sweden may be the last Western bastion of sanity when it comes to dealing with COVID-19.

So, enough of the stupid. Without a decent explanation justifying why Americans must now forego food and medicine because ‘muh coronavirus,’ people are not going to simply buy-in.

We’re going to get sick of the nonsense at some point, and probably sooner rather than later, given that domestic violence incidents have already begun to spike by 20 percent.
