(NationalSentinel) House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy boldly claimed that the “Spygate” conspirators will be held accountable after bringing the United States the “closest we’ve ever seen to a coup” in their attempt to unseat President Donald Trump after he unexpectedly won the 2016 election.
McCarthy, who appeared with Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business Network‘s “Sunday Morning Futures” program, made his comments on the heels of a draft report from Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz sent to Attorney General William Barr last week.
The report, which is currently being vetted for classified information, is supposed to detail alleged abuses and manipulation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court by Obama-era Justice Department officials including fired FBI Director James Comey, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, and her replacement, Rod Rosenstein.
Previous reports noted that the FBI portrayed an uncorroborated political opposition research document — the “Russia dossier” — paid for by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the DNC as actual intelligence in order to secure a surveillance warrant from the FISA court so officials could spy on Carter Page, then an adviser with the 2016 Trump campaign.
The goal of the spying effort, previous reports have noted, was an attempt to link the Trump campaign to Russia, then use that narrative to drive the president from office.
Special counsel Robert Mueller determined earlier this year that there was no ‘criminal collusion’ between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
“We came the closest ever to this country having a coup, and now we need accountability,” McCarthy told Bartiromo.
“I respect this attorney general so greatly, that the way he has handled this, he believes in accountability, but more importantly, he believes in the rule of law,” he continued.
When she asked if people were really going to be held accountable for any wrongdoing, McCarthy responded, “Yes.”
“We will see an indictment,” he said of McCabe, McCarthy said, as the former FBI deputy director now faces the prospect of federal charges after Horowitz faulted him in a previous inquiry for statements he made during a Hillary Clinton-related investigation.
That review found that McCabe “lacked candor” when when discussing his role in the probe with federal investigators, Fox News reported.
McCabe has denied wrongdoing. But Washington, D.C., U.S. Attorney Jessie Liu recommended charges against McCabe after the DoJ rejected his appeal. (Related:Â U.S. attorney recommends proceeding with charges against Andrew McCabe for lying to federal investigators)
The California Republican also predicted that eventually the law would catch up to Comey as well.
“In the end, I do not believe that Jim Comey will get off,” McCarthy predicted, adding, “Anyone that has had any association with trying to create this coup should be held accountable.â€
Rep. John Ratcliffe said during an interview on Fox Business Network a week ago that in order to prevent sending the message there are two systems of justice in America — one for the governing elite and one for everybody else — the Justice Department “has†to indict fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe for lying to investigators about media leaks.
“Here, you have the inspector general stating that Andrew McCabe did that multiple times, and the magic words, did so intentionally and knowing,†the Texas Republican told “Sunday Morning Futures.â€
“I think the Department of Justice is going to have to indict Andy McCabe, simply because to do otherwise would be to admit that there are separate standards for people doing the same thing for the same conduct,†he added.
