(NationalSentinel) Noted constitutional law professor Alan Dershowitz said Tuesday that the Trump administration needs to step up enforcement actions against a rising tide of Left-wing violence following another incident in Portland, Ore. last weekend involving right-leaning journalist Andy Ngo.
The Quillette writer was attacked, robbed, and savagely beaten by several members of Antifa as he attempted to cover their demonstration, winding up in the hospital overnight with a brain bleed. Portland Police also confirmed that he had been struck with milkshakes containing quick-dry cement, which could have caused chemical burns.
During an interview with Dan Bongino on Fox News, Dershowitz, a Harvard professor emeritus, also noted that the so-called “mainstream media” ignored the attack because Ngo is a supporter of POTUS Donald Trump.
“When I’ve spoken at schools like Berkeley, I’ve been threatened by Antifa,” Dershowitz noted. “I really do think the government has to do something to stop extreme Left-wing threats and violence.
“To centrist, moderate, liberal speakers like me, I’m not radical enough for Antifa, so they try to prevent me from speaking,” he continued. “So that’s been a real problem on university campuses.”
But he added: “Look, we live in a federal system. And the federal system gives authority to cities to make their own mistakes and their own decisions. The president really can’t intrude on that except in extreme cases under the Supremacy Clause. We have to leave it to the cities and to the voters to decide whether they like what they get in the cities or not.”
Conservative radio host, columnist, author, and pundit David Webb, however, noted that the FBI (under the Obama administration) has “weighed in on Antifa.”
So, too, has the Department of Homeland Security; at one time, both considered Antifa a domestic terrorist group, though no official designation was ever made.
Webb noted that there are distinct differences between a lack of proper law enforcement in many West Coast cities versus metropolises like New York City, where he lives. Liberal mayors like Ed Koch in the past still “understood” about proper policing, whereas today’s Left-wing mayors like Ted Wheeler in Portland allow politics and defiance to interfere with law enforcement, which leads to violence.
Webb also noted that local police departments in major cities don’t feel like city administrators and mayors “have their back,” either.
“And now you’re seeing police in some form or another revolt saying, ‘We just want to do our job to protect citizens, no matter what,'” he added.
Not to challenge Dershowitz on the law or the Constitution, but Supremacy Clause or not, if Antifa is designated a domestic terrorist organization — and it should be — then it would fall to the federal government to investigate and prosecute such crimes.
Unless or until that happens, though, these kinds of attacks will only increase.
