A top Democrat once again asserted on Wednesday that POTUS Donald Trump was “artificially placed” in the White House by Russia despite there being no evidence of that and despite an ‘official’ finding from special counsel Robert Mueller that no such “collusion” took place.
As Fox News reported, Rep.Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) the House Democratic Caucus chairman, nevertheless claimed during a tense hearing of the House Judiciary Committee that the Mueller report does show that Moscow is responsible for our current president.
“Seventeen different intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia interfered with our election, attacked our democracy for the sole purpose of artificially placing someone at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,†Jefferies said. “They were successful, and that’s also what the Mueller report shows.â€
Flat out, that’s a lie and it’s been debunked now for years. As The Intercept‘s Glenn Greenwald reported in January:
The U.S. media and Democrats spent six months claiming that all “17 intelligence agencies†agreed Russia was behind the hacks; the NYT finally retracted that in June, 2017: “The assessment was made by four intelligence agencies — the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency. The assessment was not approved by all 17 organizations in the American intelligence community.â€
And let’s not forget who ran these intelligence agencies: Serial liar and then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper; Trump hater and suspected Spygate co-conspirator John Brennan, meanwhile, was head of the CIA, where such intel would have originated.
But here’s Jeffries, once again, mouthing this lie as though it had never been refuted. As Fox News reported:
“[T]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities,†the special counsel report stated.
“While the investigation identified numerous links between individuals with ties to the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump Campaign, the evidence was not sufficient to support criminal charges. Among other things, the evidence was not sufficient to charge any Campaign official as an unregistered agent of the Russian government or other Russian principal,†the report said.
There will be no legal consequences for Jeffries’ slander but there ought to be. Not only is he lying, and purposely so, but by making such irresponsible and unsubstantiated claims he contributes to a rising and unwarranted animosity towards a president who has done nothing wrong, all while further dividing our country along political lines and pushing the civil society to the brink of violence.
A recent poll found that a majority of Americans already believe our country is on the verge of armed conflict. A good question for Democrats like Jeffries is why they are fomenting it.
