Americans were told that Democrats ran and won on “healthcare” as their primary issue in 2018, which is odd for a couple of reasons: 1) The Donkey Party broke the industry with “Obamacare,” a law they promised would ‘fix everything’ wrong with healthcare; and 2) They haven’t brought it up since taking over the House.
Rather, Democrats — and especially the freshmen socialists — have gone off on one legislative tangent after another, pushing proposals that have no chance of passing but which do serve to keep our country hopelessly divided.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become her party’s ‘activist in chief’ with her lead-off “Green New Deal” that fell so flat in the Senate it became the biggest legislative defeat practically in the history of the chamber, failing to garner even a single Democrat vote (57-0).
Now she’s pushing something called an “agenda for reparations” in which she seeks to pander…er, ingratiate…herself with black voters.
Appearing at race hustler Al Sharpton’s National Action Network convention, Ocasio-Cortez called for “examining and pursuing an agenda of reparations†as part of a longer list of policy proposals make up for a lack of seriousness in what they achieve in terms of polarizing the country.
Fox News reported:
Speaking about her cornerstone Green New Deal, which would entail a massive government-led overhaul of the economy and U.S. energy usage, the freshman Democrat also said the plan does not “shy away from bold conversations of health care, housing and education as human rights, of living wages and dignified work, of policy that isn’t just drafted with the next election in mind but also with the next generation in mind.â€
She told the crowd at the National Action Network convention that such a generational attitude was the “underpinning†of a list of policies that include health care for all, free public college — and reparations to black Americans for slavery.
“That is the moral political and economic underpinning of making bold investments and dignified jobs because that is the necessary plan to fix the pipes in Flint [Michigan] and clean the air in the South Bronx, and create unionized energy jobs for transitioning workers in Appalachia and West Virginia, for single-payer health care and Medicare-for-all and tuition-free public colleges and universities to prepare our nation for the future, and for the end of mass incarceration, the war on drugs, examining and pursuing an agenda of reparations and fixing the opioid crisis too,†she said.
Democrats running for their party’s 2020 presidential nomination aren’t about to miss out on this epic pandering; they, too, have leaped onto the reparations train.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, introducing the bill in January, said that “the impact of slavery and its vestiges continues to affect African Americans and indeed all Americans in communities throughout our nation.â€
She explained that the measure – formally known as the ‘Commission to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African Americans Act’ – would examine the “institution of slavery in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present, and further recommend appropriate remedies.â€
From 1619 to the…present? Didn’t slavery formally end more than 150 years ago? And what “remedies,” pray tell, would be “appropriate?”
Proposals like these aren’t serious. Paying off blacks for ‘slavery’ is an idea that the Democratic Left has been floating around for decades; even when Democrats controlled Congress and the White House during the early years of the first black president, Barack Obama, it didn’t get done.
Spending tax money to pay black Americans today for conditions none of them endured would be seen as one outrage too far for tens millions of Americans, many of whom were descended from cultures (like the Irish) who were treated almost as badly as blacks were when they got here.
But yet, the adoring Leftist “mainstream” media won’t challenge Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats who push this nonsense because in principle the media agree with the concept — which then legitimizes it and makes others come to expect it.
These are not serious policy proposals, but rather those of an inexperienced legislator with an activist mindset who isn’t nearly as interested in governing as she is in being a foot soldier for the forces who seek to move our country away from its constitutional moorings.
Our country is at a crossroads. We will either recover our founding principles by leading more constitutional conservatives to victory at the ballot box or we will self-destruct at the behest of the cartridge box.
To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln who once said that America was either going to be all slave or all free, we will either rediscover our constitutional republic or became an authoritarian dictatorship. We cannot be both.
