Conservatives are continuing to push back against Leftist Democrat attempts around the country and in Washington to impose new gun control legislation.
In North Carolina, Cherokee County has become the latest jurisdiction to take a page from the illegal alien sanctuary movement and declare itself a “gun sanctuary.”
The county becomes at least the 60th around the country where local governments have voiced opposition to encroaching gun control laws by stating they won’t actively enforce federal gun laws if they are in conflict with their definition of the Second Amendment’s “infringement” clause.
The Cherokee County Board voted 3-2 in favor of the resolution.
“Therefore, the Cherokee County Government will not authorize or appropriate government funds, resources, employees, agencies, contractors, buildings, detention centers or offices for the purpose of enforcing or assisting in the enforcement of any element of such acts, laws, orders, mandates, rules or regulations, that infringe on the right by the people to keep and bear arms as described and defined in detail above,” the resolution — posted to the county commission’s Facebook page — states.
Fox News noted:
Officials cite similar ordinances in Oregon as a reference. The declaration, which passed last week, is considered essentially symbolic.
The Cherokee Scout reported that the county’s decision to refuse to implement federal laws that do not comport with its own policies bears some similarities to the concept of sanctuary cities refusing to enforce federal immigration policies.
The Daily Caller added that counties in Illinois, Washington, Oregon and New Mexico have declared gun sanctuaries:
Sixty-three municipalities in Illinois have passed some type of measure and more are likely, according to Dave Campbell, a member of the board of Effingham County, Illinois, in an interview with Reuters. “If they want to have their own laws, that’s fine. Don’t shove them on us down here,†Campbell said.
Half of the counties in Washington state are prepared to declare sanctuaries in response to Initiative 1639, which raised the minimum age to purchase a semi-automatic rifle to 21, and increased background checks and the waiting period, according to Reuters. Five counties have passed actual resolutions. Eight counties in Oregon and 25 in New Mexico have passed measures to support sheriffs who defy gun control legislation.
Meanwhile, Rep. Andrew McDaniel, a GOP lawmaker in Missouri who says he’s tired of the federal encroachment on gun rights including silly regulations that do nothing but inconvenience law-abiding gun owners, has introduced a pair of bills aimed at ensuring all residents are armed.
One is called the “McDaniel Militia Act,” and it says, “Every resident of this state shall own at least one AR-15” rifle. The bill calls for every adult between the age of 18 and 35 who is otherwise not barred from owning a gun and provides a grace period for compliance.
“Any person who qualifies as a resident on August 28, 2019, and who does not own an AR-15 shall have one year to purchase an AR-15. Any resident qualifies as a resident after August 28, 2019, and does not own an AR-15 shall purchase an AR-15 no later than one year after qualifying as a resident,†the bill reads.
In addition, McDaniel has proposed the “McDaniel Second Amendment Act,†which states, “Every resident of this state shall own at least one handgun.†The legislation also provides the same grace period as the bill requiring ownership of an AR-15.
There’s also a tax break built into both pieces of legislation.
As of Jan. 1, “a taxpayer who did not own an AR-15 before he or she was required to own an AR-15 under section 41.1020 and who purchased an AR-15 in order to satisfy the requirements of section 41.1020 shall be allowed to claim a tax credit against such taxpayer’s income tax liability,†the McDaniel Militia Act reads. There is also similar language in the handgun bill.
McDaniel said he understands the likelihood neither bill will pass, but he said it was important to write them anyway to “point out the absurdity of the opposite side,†which piles on laws that “add more requirements and barriers for law-abiding citizens,” WDAF reported.
He said he also wanted to “make a point on mandates in general†and admitted that part of his thought process was, “Let’s get back at them.â€
Cue the Left-wing outrage.
Missouri: The Shoot Me State.
“There’s even a bill that would require every adult in Missouri between the ages of 18 and 35 to own an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, the assault weapon of choice among mass shooters in this country.” https://t.co/sdxEvg7nsw
