For someone who’s taken an oath to uphold, support, and defend the Constitution throughout her professional career, 2020 Democratic presidential contender Sen. Kamala Harris tends to, in the words of constitutionalist and talk host Mark Levin, “treat it like a smorgasbord,” picking the parts she likes and ignoring the parts she doesn’t.
Take the Second Amendment, for instance. In this respect, Harris isn’t much different from many other Leftist Democrats in that if she had her way, she would pick and choose what firearms Americans could and could not own.
At a CNN-sponsored town hall in Iowa Monday night, Harris told her audience that in a “civil society,” there’s no reason for any American to own a so-called “assault weapon.”
“We have got to have smart gun safety laws in this country, and we’ve got to stop buying this false choice. You can be in favor of the Second Amendment and also understand that there is no reason in a civil society that we have assault weapons around communities that can kill babies and police officers,” Harris said.
What sort of “smart gun laws” should we have that we don’t already have?
“Something like universal background checks. It makes perfect sense that you might want to know someone can buy a weapon that can kill another human being, you might want to know have they been convicted of a felony where they committed violence,” Harris responded.
‘Universal background checks,’ as Harris and other Democrats view them, would also include conducting them for private sales between neighbors and friends. But as we have pointed out, requiring background checks for private sales wouldn’t work without a ‘universal gun registration’ requirement; the government will first have to know which citizens own guns and what kind of guns they own so they can track sales. And tracking sales is the point of requiring background checks on retail purchases.
Well, never mind that Harris believes that before Americans can enjoy their Second Amendment right, they must first obtain government permission in the form of a background check — despite its very plain language that keeping and bearing arms “shall not be infringed.” And let’s set aside, for the time being, her assumption that she and other Democrats have some divine right to tell Americans what kind of guns they ‘should’ and ‘should not’ have. Oh, and the fact that gun rights are specifically guaranteed by the Constitution.
Beyond that, it was her comment that certain classes of weapons, in this case, those ‘assault weapons’ — which are rarely used in gun crimes — don’t belong in a “civil society.”
What about infanticide? Does that belong in a “civil society?” I ask because Democrats who run the State of New York just legalized it, even while they continue to deny citizens full use of the Second Amendment.
New York Democrats have just made late-term abortions the law of the land, legalizing the practice of murdering preborn infants up until the moment of birth. The bill, named the Reproductive Health Act, uses an overly broad “health†exception for third-term abortions which many people find repugnant. Even health professionals within the field of obstetrics say that third-term abortions are never necessary; at that point, the child should just be delivered, not murdered.
After making its way through state legislature, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the highly detestable Reproductive Health Act (RHA) into law. Under RHA, abortions are legal until 24 weeks of gestation — at which point, a majority of babies are able to survive outside the womb with well-orchestrated care.
But, the legislation also provides room for abortions after this 24-week period, when a baby would have an excellent chance at survival. The broadness of this “health†exception has been a sticking point for pro-life advocates.
New York Right To Life contends that the legislation makes it possible to abort a baby for any reason, including “age, economic, social and emotional factors, rather than the biological definition of ‘health’ that normally comes to mind.â€
As the 2020 presidential election heats up and more Democrats leap into the race, I expect we’re going to hear more moralizing about guns from the donkey party contenders. What we won’t hear from them is how they justify using words like “moral” and “civil society” when talking about guns in America while butchers in at least one state are literally killing viable babies and celebrating it.
It’s a stretch to believe that Harris isn’t aware of the new law in New York. But instead of holding that up as something that doesn’t belong in a “civil society,” she defaulted to the Left’s favorite policy fall-back: Finding new ways to limit gun rights, even as Planned Parenthood kills far more human beings every year.
Hopefully, POTUS Trump will bring up this monstrous hypocrisy during the debates.
