Thanks to inaction by the GOP-led Congress, half of which will soon be controlled by Democrats, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in southern Texas are being forced to release thousands of migrants who entered the U.S. illegally.
According to CBS News, about 400 migrants were released in El Paso just two days before Christmas, with an additional 200 on Wednesday.
Failed U.S. Senate candidate and new darling of the Left, Rep. Robert “Beto” O’Rourke, tweeted that an additional 500 migrants are expected to be released today.
“Many thanks to volunteers & donors who ensure that we take care of families being released by ICE in El Paso. 200 to be released today. Over 500 tomorrow,†O’Rourke tweeted Christmas Day.

So, what’s going on? Why is ICE dumping now-homeless migrants onto city streets in El Paso?
In a word, the law.
While Leftist activist federal judges can make it up as they go along, ICE is required to follow the law and thus is stricted in how long it can detain migrants, CBS News reported.
On Monday, ICE issued a statement pointing the finger of blame squarely at Congress for allowing the restraints to remain in place rather than empower the agency under the rule of law to deal with an influx of migrants.
“After decades of inaction by Congress, the government remains severely constrained in its ability to detain and promptly remove families with no legal basis to remain in the U.S.,†the statement said, according to KDBC, CBS4 in El Paso.
“To mitigate the risk of holding family units past the timeframe allotted to the government, ICE has curtailed reviews of post-release plans from families apprehended along the southwest border,†the agency continued.
“ICE continues to work with local and state officials and (non-governmental organization) partners in the area so they are prepared to provide assistance with transportation or other services,” the statement said.
According to KFVS12, the city expects a total of more than 1,200 undocumented migrants in the coming week — all with no housing or means of feeding and taking care of themselves. Many are being moved into shelters but space there will run out soon, no doubt.
And this doesn’t even account for the hundreds and likely thousands of other migrants ICE will soon have to dump back into U.S. cities because that’s the law.
What’s more, now that Democrats are taking over control of the House, there is zero chance leader Nancy Pelosi will allow a vote on any new legislation that would reform current laws hampering ICE’s ability to remove people in the country illegally — not that Democrats would pass one anyway.
America has the first president in modern history ready, willing, and able to sign major immigration reform legislation that would close asylum loopholes, empower border agents, and assist immigration courts in handling the backlog of cases awaiting mitigation, but GOP leaders in the House and Senate weren’t interested.
Elections indeed have consequences.
POTUS Trump’s not the problem when it comes to immigration reform. It’s the Washington political establishment.
