(National Sentinel) Clueless in  DC: The general assumption among rational, thinking people is that our lawmakers ought to know more than just a little something about what they’re investigating.
Whether they are briefed by staffers or research subject matter on their own, the thinking is they are at least semi-literate about an issue when witnesses from various federal agencies show up to provide testimony.
That is especially true when the issue being discussed is one that is vitally important to the security of our country and the integrity of our national borders.
And yet one Democratic senator, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, showed up at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this week to discuss the issue of illegal immigration, border security policy, and immigration law enforcement without a clue in her head about the process.
The Blaze reported:
Top Immigration and Customs Enforcement official Matthew Albence gave Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) a lesson on his agency’s policies and family residential centers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday on Capitol Hill.
Hirono provoked Albence’s ire with a non-sequitur question, asking, “Would you send your child to [the Family Residential Center]?â€
Albence responded by clearly exposing the senator’s lack of understanding on the issue of immigration and family detention centers.
Democrats have voiced their displeasure with family separations at the U.S. border but Albence defended ICE’s position.
“Again, I think we’re missing the point,†Albence noted. “These individuals are here because they have broken a law. There has to be a process.â€
Hirono still didn’t understand the crux of the issue.
“They have broken a law only as deemed so by the president,†she told Albence.
“No ma’am, they’re for violation of Title 8 of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act. Okay, U.S. 13:25. Illegal entry is both a criminal and a civil violation. They are in those FRCs pending the outcome of that civil immigration process. They have broken the law.â€
“Well, these are mainly… My understanding is that under zero tolerance [the Trump administration’s position that all illegal crossings should be prosecuted] these are no longer civil proceedings but in fact criminal proceedings,†Hirono said.
Albence responded that yes, they are “criminal proceedings†when Border Patrol prosecuted them. “But at the conclusion of that process, once the individual came into ICE custody they would go through administrative proceedings,†he added.
To which she responded, “I’m confused.”
Wow. So it’s all POTUS Trump’s fault; he just ‘created’ this law all by himself and is now imposing it like a tyrant, right?
Conservative firebrand Ann Coulter called Hirono out for her ignorance of the issue.
“Witness at ICE hearing patiently explains to Sen. Mazie Hirono that illegal aliens are illegal because of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Act, not Trump. Sen. Hirono: “I’m confused.†No kidding,†she wrote.

How can we have a serious debate about how best to fix our immigration system if those we entrust to fix it are clueless?
