(National Sentinel) Bad Policy: President Donald J. Trump took to Twitter Thursday morning to ease concerns among his base that he was caving on gun control demands by Democratic lawmakers.

After holding a televised meeting with lawmakers at the White House on Wednesday in which various gun measures were discussed following last week’s shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school, Trump urged Congress to “respect” the Second Amendment.

Despite the tacit endorsement of many of the gun control proposals from Democrats in the meeting, Trump noted on Twitter that some of them were good and “some not so good” on Thursday morning, reported Breitbart News.

The National Rifle Association called the meeting “great TV” but “bad policy.”

“Instead of punishing law-abiding gun owners for the acts of a deranged lunatic our leaders should pass meaningful reforms that would actually prevent future tragedies,” said NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker.

However, on Twitter the president only endorsed the notion of expanded background checks.

“Gun free zones are proven targets of killers,” Trump wrote. “After many years, a Bill should emerge. Respect 2nd Amendment!”

“Many ideas, some good & some not so good, emerged from our bipartisan meeting on school safety yesterday at the White House. Background Checks a big part of conversation. Gun free zones are proven targets of killers. After many years, a Bill should emerge. Respect 2nd Amendment!” the president tweeted.
